Hex Key Wrench | Everything you need to know about them

The hex key is also known as the Allen key. This is a simple tool and mainly this is used to drive screws and bolts with authentic hexagonal sockets in their heads. There are different types of hex keys available in the market and you may choose any type of hex key as per your need.  Once you will use the hex key, this allows for high torque. This type of hex key includes a hexagonal shape, hex keys permit high torque. It also includes minimal clearance. To use hex keys, you don’t need much space. This will also protect fasteners from damage.

1. Different shapes to meet different needs

According to the shape of the head, hex key wrenches can be roughly divided into three categories: Flat head , Ball head and Torx (or Star)

•Flat head: The head of this wrench is flat, and it is suitable for bolts or nuts that require direct, flat contact. The flat head design is simple and practical, not easy to slip, and is the first choice in many mechanical assemblies.

▪Ball head: Unlike the flat head, the head of the ball head hex key is spherical. This design allows the wrench to easily cope with even a slight deviation in the angle when tightening or loosening the bolt. Ball head hex key  wrenches are particularly suitable for places with small spaces or difficult angles.

▪Torx (star) : The shape of the head of this wrench is like a flower, hence the name. Torx hex key wrenches are usually used for special bolts or nuts, which are also designed to match the star shape. Due to its unique shape, this wrench has higher stability when tightening or loosening.

2. Various specifications, adaptable to various sizes

The specifications of the hex key wrench are defined according to the size of any two opposite sides on the wrench body. The size unit here is millimeter, but there are also imperial sizes to choose from. Therefore, we can see two types of metric hex key wrenches and imperial hex key wrenches on the market.

The minimum specification of the metric hex key wrench is generally 1.5mm, and the maximum specification can be 27mm or 36mm. The minimum specification of the imperial hex key wrench is generally 1/16 inch, and the maximum specification can be 3/4 inch. For the Torx hex key wrench, the size range is generally from T10 to T50.

Choosing the right specification is crucial to ensure the smooth progress of the work. Oversized or undersized wrenches may lead to reduced work efficiency and even damage bolts or nuts.

3. Length selection, the balance between labor saving and efficiency

In addition to shape and specifications, the length of the hex key wrench is also one of the factors to be considered when choosing. According to the length of the body, the hex key wrench is usually divided into three types: standard length, extended length and extra length.

The extended wrench is generally 1.5 times the standard length, while the extra-long wrench is about 2 times the standard length. Longer wrenches can provide more torque when tightening or loosening bolts, which is more labor-saving. But at the same time, the price will increase accordingly. Therefore, when choosing, you need to weigh it according to actual needs and budget.

4. Material differences determine quality and durability

The material of the hex key wrench has a decisive influence on its quality and durability. Common materials include 45 steel, chrome vanadium steel(Cr-v), S2 (also known as chrome-molybdenum-vanadium steel), etc.

45 steel and Cr-v are commonly used tool steels with good strength and toughness, and the price is relatively affordable. S2 steel is a higher quality tool steel that adds elements such as chromium, molybdenum and vanadium to further improve strength and wear resistance.

When choosing a hexagonal wrench, you can choose the right material according to your needs and budget. For general household use or occasional mechanical repairs, 45 steel and chrome-vanadium steel wrenches are enough. For professionals or occasions that require long-term, high-intensity use, wrenches made of S2 material are more suitable.
