TCT VS HSS ANNULAR CUTTER

Tungsten Carbide Tipped (TCT) annular cutters and High-Speed Steel (HSS) annular cutters are two different types of cutting tools used for drilling holes in metal and other materials. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the choice between them depends on the specific application, material being cut, and desired outcomes. Here’s a comparison between TCT annular cutters and HSS annular cutters:

Tungsten Carbide Tipped (TCT) Annular Cutters

TCT annular cutters are made with a steel body and a tungsten carbide insert, which is brazed onto the cutting edges. The tungsten carbide insert provides the cutter with excellent hardness and durability, making it ideal for drilling through hard materials like steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. TCT cutters are also known for their superior cutting speed and accuracy, which reduces the need for secondary operations like reaming or deburring.

Advantages:

1). Long service life. They can last up to 10 times longer than HSS cutters, which makes them a cost-effective option for high volume drilling operations. Additionally, the carbide insert provides greater resistance to heat and wear, which makes TCT cutters less prone to breakage or chipping.

2).Precision and Accuracy. The tungsten carbide insert provides a sharp cutting edge, which ensures that the hole diameter remains constant throughout the drilling process. This results in a more accurate and uniform hole, which is essential for precision machining operations.

Limitations:

TCT annular cutter is more brittle than HSS cutters, which means that they are more prone to breaking if they encounter a hard spot or a defect in the material being drilled. Also, TCT cutters are more expensive than HSS cutters, which can be a drawback for smaller operations or those with limited budgets.

High Speed Steel (HSS) Annular Cutters

HSS annular cutters are made from high-speed steel steel, which provides good hardness and durability for drilling through a variety of materials. HSS cutters are suitable for drilling through materials like steel, aluminum, brass, and plastic, making them a versatile option for many applications. HSS cutters are also more flexible than TCT cutters, which makes them less prone to breaking or chipping.

Advantages:

1). Lower Cost. They are significantly cheaper than TCT cutters, which makes them a great option for smaller operations or those with limited budgets. Additionally, HSS cutters are more forgiving than TCT cutters, which means that they are less likely to break or chip if they encounter a hard spot or a defect in the material being drilled.

2).Flexibility. They can be used with a wide range of drilling machines and can drill through a variety of materials, making them a versatile option for many applications. 

Limitations :

HSS annular cutter has a shorter lifespan than TCT cutters and require more frequent resharpening to maintain their cutting performance. Also, HSS cutters can be slower than TCT cutters and may require more force to drill through hard materials.
