What is Reduced Shank Drill Bit?

Reduced shank drill bits have a smaller shank diameter than their cutting head. They can drill larger holes while still being compatible with standard drill chuck sizes on handheld drills. Reduced shank drill bits are used in maintenance and repair applications.

HSS (High-Speed Steel) reduced shank drill bits come in various specifications to suit different drilling needs. The most common specifications include the shank size, cutting diameter, overall length, flute length, and point angle. Here's a breakdown of the common specifications:

1. Shank Size

-1/2" Shank: The most common shank size, allowing larger diameter bits to fit into a standard 1/2" drill chuck.

-3/8" Shank: Used for smaller reduced shank bits that fit into a 3/8" drill chuck.

-3/4'' Shank: Used for smaller reduced shank bits that fit into a 3/4" drill chuck.

2. Cutting Diameter

-Ranges: The cutting diameter of reduced shank bits can vary widely:

--Small Diameters: Starting at around 1/2" (for Silver & Deming bits).

--Large Diameters: Can go up to 1-1/2" or more, depending on the bit type.

-Common Sizes: Sizes like 5/8", 3/4", 7/8", 1", and 1-1/2" are common for general-purpose drilling in larger diameters.

3. Length:

The standard size for a Silver& Deming bit is a 3-inch bit with a 3–inch shank, for a total length of 6–inches.

4. Point Angle

-118 Degrees: The most common point angle for general-purpose drilling, suitable for a wide range of materials including metals, wood, and plastics.

-135 Degrees: Often used for tougher materials like stainless steel, this angle reduces walking and allows for more precise starts.
